Wildcat Tower
Weathered Rhyolite on a base of silicified tuff. Both rocks are from the Wildcat Mountain Supervolcano, located east of Prineville. The tuff was part of the initial explosive eruption that created a crater over five miles wide, and the rhyolite is from a small dome volcano that grew around the edge of the main crater. With a piece like this, I enjoy the fact that the two related stones are in their proper stratigraphic order, with the younger rhyolite sitting on top of the older tuff.
