Oregon Timestones

Oregon Timestones is a set of 10 stone sculptures which tell the 300-million year story of Oregon's geologic history. The Timestones were created to accompany the "Birth of Cascadia" multimedia event produced by the Oregon Origins Project (www.oregonorigins.org). "Birth of Cascadia" tells the same geologic story in a symphony of ten movements, each representing a major event in the history, and each accompanied by a 2D artwork commissioned for the projects.  The composer and visual artists traveled with me to locations all over the state to see the rocks and land forms representing each of the 10 events. The work premiered June 21st and 22nd, 2025 at the Reser Theater in Beaverton, with the 2D art on display at Stelo Gallery in Portland from June 5th to July 12th, 2025. Oregon Timestoens was on display at the Reser for the performances.

The Birth of Cascadia tells the geologic history of the place we call Oregon, inspired by ten events that have shaped the landscape we see today. The history of the earth is written in rocks, and this series of sculpted stones is intended to let them tell their own story. Each Timestone is made of rock from one of the ten events, collected from across Oregon. In geology, rocks represent the progression of time, and the most fundamental relationship is that younger rocks lie on top of older rocks. Each Timestone is supported by a base from the previous event, maintaining that important order.  I try to preserve much of the natural shape and surface patina of each piece of stone, individual characteristics that have been shaped over thousands of years.
