Sail

Columbia River Basalt from Wasco County, Oregon. Basalt shrinks as it cools, often forming geometric networks of cracks.  Water slowly percolating through these cracks for thousands of years weathers the basalt, forming a patina of orange and brown minerals, while just beneath the skin the lava is still fresh and black.
