Out of the Depths

Marble from Grant County, pivot mount on a base of countertop scrap. This rock was layered with blueschist, which only forms when rocks are rapidly dragged to depths of 15 miles and then rapidly returned to the surface in a continental collision zone. It’s hard to imagine the journey this stone has taken. This rock is one of the oldest in Oregon, and is part of an exotic terrane, rocks which formed thousands of miles away and were transported by plate tectonics to be scraped off on the edge of North America.
