Orange Bowl

Bowl made of hydrothermally altered andesite Lava from Multnomah County. This young andesite lava is normally grey with white and black flecks. After this lava cooled, it  was permeated by hot acidic mineral waters that oxidized the iron in the rock to dark red hematite, a form of iron oxide. On the water-worn surface of the rock, the hematite has been replaced by other forms of iron oxide that give it its yellow-orange color.
