Heartstone

Quartzite from Colorado on a base of marble countertop scrap. This rock first formed as sandstone composed of grains of quartz sand.  Over hundreds of millions of years it was buried deeply in the earth, where the intense heat and pressure caused the quartz grains t recrystallize into a solid mass, preserving some of the fine layering from the original sandstone as colorful bands. This piece was eventually eroded from the bedrock and carried by a river which shaped and smoothed it.
