Harp Unstrung

Columbia River basalt shard from Sherman County on a base of patinated scrap steel. Like many of my basalt pieces, I have preserved the original shape and smoothed and polished a few of the facets to show the dark interior that lies just beneath the surface. The natural jointing turns the bedrock into a complex 3D puzzle, and as erosion brings the stone near the surface of the earth, the joints open slightly, allowing groundwater to percolate through the rock, leaving a weathering rind on the joint surfaces.  Erosion eventually frees the stone for me to find, usually in a ditch alongside the road.

HxWxD: 18"x11"x11" The base has a turntable attached.
