Fire Bowl
Welded tuff from Lake County, Oregon. Welded tuff forms in huge volcanic eruptions that lay down thick layers of hot ash and pumice which become compressed by their own weight and weld into a hard rock. Mineral-rich water permeated this rock for thousands of years, leaving behind bright red iron, and microscopic crystals of quartz which make it very hard and lustrous. Angular dark chunks are pieces of rock ripped from the throat of the erupting volcano, and thin wisps of red are pieces of pumice that have been smashed flat as the rock compressed.
