Blue Monument
Blueschist from Curry County, Oregon. Blueschist is a unique rock that forms only in the extreme conditions of subduction zones, where two tectonic plates and pieces of ocean floor are dragged quickly to great depths and then forced back to the surface . The unusual blue minerals in this metamorphic rock form when pieces of the ocean floor are quickly dragged to great depth and then forced back to the surface. The rock contains the blue mineral glaucophane, as well as small red garnets. This piece was originally intended as part of a ten sculpture series telling the story of Oregon's geologic history, as part of the Oregon Origins Project's "Birth of Cascadia" performance.
