Black Wing

Columbia River Basalt from Wasco County, Oregon on a base of scrap steel. This basalt is from the bottom of a lava flow that is 300 feet thick despite being 150 miles from its source. The rock is unusually dense and black because of the pressure it was under as it cooled, giving it a nearly metalllic finish when polished. The natural shape of this piece reminds me of a wing, a feather or a leaf, depending on the orientation  The trailing edge of the wing shape is quite sharp.
