Black Crag
Columbia RIver Basaslt from Sherman County, Oregon on a base of scrap countertop marble. This basalt comes from a quarry, where large blocks of very dense basalt were heaped up, and small pieces flaked off as the blocks were jumbled together. The density of the basalt results in interesting fracture patterns on the broken surfaces, and the stone takes an almost vitreous luster when brushed or polished. This fragment recalls the outline of a sharp craggy mountain.
