Black Arrow

Columbia River Basalt from Sherman County, Oregon on a base of quartz and iron-infused mudstone from Crook County.   This basalt comes from a quarry, where large blocks of very dense basalt were heaped up, and small pieces flaked off as the blocks were jumbled together.  The density of the basalt results in interesting fracture patterns on the broken surfaces, and the stone takes an almost vitreous luster when brushed or polished.  This fragment had the natural shape of an arrowhead.

HxWxD: 13", 11", 7"

Basalt 16 million years old, base 40 million years old.
