Tempio Antico

Weathered and hydrothermally altered rhyolite lava from Crook County on a base of Columbia River Basalt from Sherman County. This reminded me of an ancient temple, with some of its original splendor still visible as it slowly decays in a forgotten desert. The grain in the rhyolite looks like wood, but is actually flow banding that develops as the pasty rhyolite lava oozes from the vent.
