Tarryall Tablet

Pikes Peak Granite. Collected near the Lost Creek Wilderness SW of Denver, Colorado.  This billion-year-old granite has very coarse crystals with abundant black biotite. The biotite expands as it weathers, causing the rock to crumble into coarse sand.  Small loose pieces like this with a natural surface are rare. In order to smooth and polish this piece I had to repeatedly infuse the cracks with superglue, then grind off a few millimeters and repeat.

12" by 14" by 1.5" thick.
