Stone sculpture made from naturally sourced welded volcanic ash collected from Steins Pillar in Crook County, Oregon.
13" x 11"
Available for sale $500
This piece is made of welded tuff that erupted from the Wildcat Mountain Caldera, a 20 mile wide crater that erupted east of Prineville, Oregon 40 million years ago. Much of the ash from the eruption was spread over hundreds of square miles surrounding the caldera, but the thick layer that fell back into the crater welded together to form this hard, dense rock. Stein's Pillar is a spectacular 300-foot-tall spire of welded tuff that stands near the middle of the caldera. This piece was collected at the base of the Pillar.
