 Monument Basalt from Girds Canyon, on a base of Monument basalt. Monument is one of several sets of flood basalt flows that make up the Columbia River Basalt.  It is primarily located around the town of Monument of the North Fork of the John Day River.

This basalt shard with its deeply weathered surface reminded me of an ancient monument, set along a lonely coast long ago. Was it a a warning, a guide?
