Fire on the Mountain
Andesite bomb crust fragment on a base of soapstone countertop scrap. Collected near Burns, Oregon. This piece came from a volcanic bomb 3-4 ft in diameter that formed when a large blob of liquid magma was thrown in the air during a violent eruption. The outer skin solidified quickly as it flew, but expanding gasses in the liquid core caused the skin to expand and crack. It came to rest in a heap of ash and scoria and was eventually buried beneath hundreds of feet of younger ash and lava. When erosion exposed the bomb, it eventually cracked and fell to pieces, spalling off several large fragments of crust which I was fortunate to find.
