Ancient Vessel
Stone sculpture made from welded volcanic ash collected near Madras, Oregon.
Length 12", width 6"
Donated
This piece is made from the Smith Rock welded tuff which was erupted from the Crooked River Caldera about 30 million years ago. The Caldera, centered on Prineville, Oregon is 30 miles wide, and this same tuff makes up much of the spectacular rock formations at Smith Rocks State Park. Much of the ash from the Caldera travelled east and was deposited in the area of the Painted Hills in places like Turtle Cove.
